TAKING THE MYSTERY OUT OF WINE PRONOUNCIATION:
Why are so many wine grape varieties hard to pronounce? It can be embarrassing to ask for a glass of wine at a restaurant or bar when you aren’t even sure how to say the name. Try to remember that most people get it wrong sometimes, and a couple of varieties have Australian and European spellings and pronunciations, so it’s virtually impossible to be completely correct all the time. But for those times when you want to show the wine snobs that you know your stuff, here are a couple of popular wine varieties and their pronunciations:
Chardonnay - shar-don-ay
Pinot Gris - pee-no gree
Riesling - rees-ling
Sauvignon Blanc - so-vin-yon blahn
Semillon - sem-ee-yon
Viognier - vee-on-yay
Cabernet Sauvignon - kab-er-nay so-veen-yon
Merlot - mer-low
Mourvedre - moor-ved-rah
Nebbiolo - neb-ee-o-lo
Sangiovese - san-gee-o-vay-zay
Shiraz - sheer-az
Tempranillo - temp-rah-nee-o
