Dookie community pride at heart

ABOUT DOOKIE

Destination Dookie

Dookie is unique destination featuring beautiful rolling hills, quintessential Australian farm settings and spectacular seasonally changing landscapes. Dookie also offers a surprising mix of outdoor leisure, culinary experiences and a vibrant arts community.

The township of Dookie is nestled between two great granite outcrops and is surrounded by generations of family-owned grazing and cropping properties. Famous for Victoria's oldest Agricultural College (est.1886), geologists, academics and farmers who know Dookie well, all marvel at the fabric of the deep, rich, red, Cambrian soil.

What to do on a day out in Dookie?

Experience the quintessential seasonal landscape for yourself; walking the Mulana nin iyoga trail up Mount Major or cycling the Dookie rail trail.

In town, coffee and jelly cake at the Dookie Emporium, sampling the Dookie Burger at the General Store, a picnic in the CWA gardens and a cold drink at the Gladstone Hotel should also be on your must-taste list, then ensure you check out the Dookie Nomadic Art Silos in town and feast your eyes on Dookie’s Flowering gumtree in the main street.

Rye at Tallis

In 2023 Richard and Alice closed the cellar door and leased their building to Dookie locals Hannah and Luke Harmer and this much-loved Dookie destination evolved into a new business, ‘Rye at Tallis’; independently operated and no longer run by Tallis Wine.

From May 2025, Rye at Tallis transitioned to focus exclusively on private events and weddings, marking an exciting new chapter for Rye at Tallis.

The venue is no longer open on regular days for the general public, but is available for hire day or evening, Monday to Sunday, for bespoke event packages crafted by their events specialists for corporate events, weddings and special celebrations.

Rye at Tallis host monthly Twilight sessions, ticketed events and they open for select occasions and long weekends, so visit their website or follow their socials to stay in the loop.

An ever-changing landscape.

Whatever time of year you visit, the Dookie landscape will put on a show. Broadacre farming, the seasons and nature combine, to produce a textured, colourful patchwork, blanketing the ancient volcanic dirt. When the long warm days of autumn are broken by rain, farmers sow their grain and the red ploughed paddocks turn a verdant green, as crops germinate and grow. On the bridge of winter and spring the canola uplifts with parcels of iridescent yellow splendour. A classic Australian pastoral scene awaits in summer with fields of golden wheat. The Dookie landscape and the Goulburn Valley’s big sky country captures the heart and truly inspires.
